Pharmacological action
Silybum marianum is a kind of flavonoid compound extracted and isolated from silybum Marianum fruit. It has obvious protection and stability of liver cell membrane, can improve liver function, produce enzyme lowering effect, and is not prone to enzyme rebound. Silybin can stabilize the liver cell membrane and maintain its integrity, promote the ultrastructural recovery of hepatocytes, promote the division and growth of normal hepatocytes, improve the ability of synthesis of RNA and protein of hepatocytes, improve the ability of the reticuloendothelial system to make macrophages, enhance the activity of macrophages, and accelerate the clearance of viruses. At the same time, silybin can promote fat transfer and antioxidant effect, prevent excessive oxidation and infiltration of fat, reduce liver steatosis; It can also promote the metabolic function of liver, enhance its detoxification effect, and reduce the damage of toxic substances to liver cells. Therefore, silybin has the effect of protecting normal liver cells and promoting the recovery of damaged cell membranes.
pharmacokinetics
About 8% of the administered dose was excreted 48 hours after intravenous injection of silybin. About 20% of the dose is excreted 48 hours after oral administration, of which about 80% is excreted by bile in the form of metabolites, and most of the rest is excreted in its original form.

Silybin is a traditional liver protection drug in continental Europe, which can improve symptoms and liver biochemical function of viral chronic hepatitis, and the liver histopathology of some patients can also be improved to a certain extent. It has been used to treat toxic hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, metabolic fatty liver, and has certain curative effect on early cirrhosis. However, silybin works slowly, generally takes 1 to 2 months to gradually take effect, and the course of treatment is at least 3 to 6 months.
